Dans la nuit du 5 au 6 juin 1944, après quatre années d'occupation, l'opération Neptune est lancée. Minutieusement
préparé par l'état-major allié, ce premier assaut sur les plages normandes est capital. Il doit établir la tête de pont de l'opération Overlord, et permettre l'acheminement des troupes qui s'engageront dans la Bataille de Normandie.

Mais pendant deux années, Hitler a fait renforcer le Mur de l'Atlantique de la Norvège jusqu'à l'Espagne. Dès sa nomination au commandement du groupe d'armées B, en janvier 1944, Rommel intensifie encore les travaux de défense. Le béton est coulé par millions de tonnes par l'Organisation Todt. Murs anti-chars, postes de tir, batteries, champs de mines doivent couper toute tentative d'approche par les plages. Les Alliés sont amplement renseignés : les troupes devront affronter à découvert ces fortifications côtières et payer un énorme tribut pour ouvrir les premières brèches.

75 ans après le Débarquement, la Normandie conserve partout les stigmates de la guerre. Après la disparition des derniers vétérans, ils seront les seuls témoins de la liberté retrouvée. Les vestiges du Débarquement sont aujourd'hui les garants de notre mémoire et visiter les plages de Normandie, rendues à la promenade et aux loisirs, est le plus sûr moyen ne pas oublier.

After four years of German occupation of France, Operation Neptune was launched on the night of June 5, 1944. Planned down to the last detail by the Allied military command, this first assault on the Normandy beaches had to be decisive. Its objective was to establish a bridgehead for Operation Overlord and thereby allow the transit of soldiers who would go on to fight in the Battle of Normandy.

Over a two-year period, Hitler had reinforced the Atlantic Wall that ran from Norway to the Franco-Spanish border. Upon his appointment as commander of the Army Group B, Field Marshal Rommel intensified work on the defences between Holland and the Loire Valley in France. The Organisation Todt poured millions of tons of concrete to construct and reinforce the anti-tank walls, firing posts, batteries and mine fields deemed necessary to thwart any attempt to approach the shore. The Allies knew in advance that the troops would have no choice but to attack the fortifications in the open and thereby pay an enormous price to make any initial opening.

75 years after the D-Day landings, the battle scars remain visible in Normandy. And once the last veterans have gone, these ruins will be all that is left to remind us of the price of freedom. These D-Day relics are what will continue to preserve our memory, and visiting the Normandy beaches, nowadays a popular leisure destination, is the surest way to never forget.
