‘Martha’s Labyrinth’ tells the story of Jewish biologist Martha Geiringer's 1938 escape from Vienna to Ghent, where she meets the married doctor, Yvonne. This biographical portrait of two fascinating women takes us through two decades in a war-torn world, a period of enormous political instability. It is about Martha, highly intelligent, stubborn and determined. And about Yvonne, the equally stubborn, determined and intelligent young Ghent doctor. The intimate and powerful relationship between these two women is set against a backdrop of the slow encroachment of the Nazi ideology into every aspect of their lives and those of their surrounding families and colleagues. It chronicles, in detail, different layers of Ghent life as it slowly deteriorates, and Martha is driven further and further into the depths of the Labyrinth.
