Empar Fernández has masterfully constructed a novel where she magnificently highlights life in the battlefields of WWI and also that of Barcelona during the first social revolts led by women.

The year is 1918 and as WWI is bringing Europe to crumbles, Gracia Ballesteros is forced to abruptly leave Barcelona.

In Bordeaux she meets Carter Irvine, a young American lad who enlisted as a volunteer to fight in the Old Continent. They slowly build a relationship that must overcome their physical distance as well as any dangers that lie ahead of them. Meanwhile, more and more apparently healthy people die around him due to the Spanish flu, an epidemic that would terrorize the world.
