There are many facts about the Vietnam War, but how much do you know? Before you decide to take sides, it is important to understand the origin of this war. The country of Vietnam was colonized by France in 1802 and remained so until 1954, when the French were defeated in South Vietnam. The Viet Minh led a nationalist guerrilla fight to declare independence from France. In 1950, Viet Minh and Chinese forces attack French outposts. In response, President Eisenhower sends military advisors to the French, stating that any mistake could set off a domino effect. The Vietnamese eventually gain their independence from France, but not until the United States had gotten involved. During the war, more than 2.7 million American soldiers served in the South. Of these, 25% were draftees. Draftees made up about 30% of the combat fatalities. This is a frightening statistic that should never be overlooked. But despite its horrors, the Vietnam War Facts reveal that Americans and Vietnamese soldiers did their share to help the soldiers in Vietnam. But what about the women who helped soldiers during the war?
