The Revolution has broken out in Massachusetts and spreading to the other colonies. Howie Karger becomes a member of the Sons of Liberty while Pip wants to remain neutral. He is tired of fighting and wants to live in peace with his family. He doesn't like the treatment the colonies have received from England, but believes that negotiations should be made to promote change. He is a respected person in his community, chosen to be a member of the New York Congress. He serves only to be a voice of stability. Personal tragedy will cause him to take up the cause. George Washington makes him Colonel of Scouts and uses him to scout and advise his commanders in the fields in Indian tactics and guerilla methods of fighting. He serves in many battles in the north and the southern colonies. Howie is made Major of Scouts and Keme a Captain. They, too, serve at his command to advise and lead attacks on British and Indian attacks. Pip meets a new love in his life and has a small family reunion with his sisters Barbara from England and Gwen from New York City when his grandparents die.
