Lord Elgin (1903) is a biography written by John George Bourinot about James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin. Elgin was a British colonial administrator who served as Governor-General of the Province of Canada from 1847 to 1854. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the political and economic development of Canada, including the establishment of responsible government and the construction of the Grand Trunk Railway. However, Elgin is perhaps best known for his controversial decision to remove several sculptures and artifacts from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, which he believed were in danger of being destroyed. This act, known as the Elgin Marbles controversy, has been the subject of much debate and criticism. Bourinot's biography provides a detailed account of Elgin's life, including his upbringing, education, and political career, as well as his personal relationships and contributions to Canadian and British history.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
