Révolté par l'opposition de ses parents à sa vocation
d'officier, Pierre s'embarque pour l'Amérique et s'engage
dans l'armée nordiste au début de la guerre de
Sécession. Il rencontre Johnson, jeune esclave noir
en fuite, avec lequel il va fonder le régiment noir, qui
jouera un rôle important dans la guerre.
Au-delà des somptueux panoramiques de batailles
dignes des plus prestigieux romans d'aventures, ce
grand "western de l'inconscient" frappe surtout par
sa dimension initiatique, et par la mise en place
d'une épopée intérieure.
Le Régiment noir, publié par Gallimard en 1972,
avait fait l'objet en 2000, chez Actes Sud, d'une
nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l'auteur. C'est
cette dernière version qui est ici proposée.
