Omschrijving

Robert Welch Herrick (1868-1938) was a novelist who was part of the new generation of American realists. His novels deal with the turbulence of industrialised society and the turmoil it can create in sensitive, isolated people. Born in Cambridge, Mass., he attended Harvard where he received a BA degree in 1890. He later taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and from 1905-23 he was a professor of literature at the University of Chicago during which time he wrote 13 novels. Similar to England's George Gissing, he developed themes of social discontent, the changing role of women, and the effects of social isolation, and his work achieves its power from a melancholic fatalism. He dreaded the brutality and ignorance of the mob as much as he despised the avarice and ennui of the upper class, and was suspicious of political doctrines and utopian legislation, believing that true progress for human happiness must lie in individuals making moral choices. In January 1935 Herrick was appointed as a Secretary to the US Virgin Islands, serving as acting-Governor during a period of political scandal when the then-Governor and his Lieutenant were called back to testify to the Senate. He died on St Thomas, VI in 1938.
