As an integral component of the spiritual campaign undertaken in New Spain, missionary theatre was used for catechistic and didactic purposes that resulted in unique interpretations of biblical-inspired histories and engaging artistic approaches to understanding the tenets of Christianity. Against the backdrop of cultural encounters between the Old World and the New, the rich legacy of sixteenth-century Indian-American plays is examined in relation to religious iconography of the period and testimonial accounts of chroniclers and historians. This book offers new perspectives on evangelical theatre and shows how the fusion of European and native-American dramatic traditions reflected the ethos of colonization and early apostolic endeavors.
