Daniel Selig

Daniel Selig, enfant de Colmar, l'un des fers de
lance des « modernes », rassemblés dans le groupe Art-
Recherche le bien nommé, faisait une peinture
éminemment décorative, narrative et sensuelle.

Qui soupçonnerait derrière la moustache débonnaire et le sourire toujours
accueillant du bon docteur Selig cet autre univers, celui du peintre, nourri de
lectures, où le rêve et l'imaginaire côtoient l'irréel et le fantastique ?

Ce livre retrace les deux carrières d'Alfred et Daniel Selig, peintres père
et fils, et pourtant si différents l'un de l'autre.

Deux talents :

Alfred, artiste professionnel, figuratif, influencé par le romantisme alsacien et
Daniel, brillant par sa précocité et l'abondance de son oeuvre dans le registre
de l'imaginaire, le fantastique et le surréalisme.

Je me souviens des mercredis après-midi. Un air de Jazz,
une sérénité à laquelle, j'avais parfois accès. Les odeurs,
peintures et essences. Et puis les couleurs...

Dans les tableaux que vous allez contempler, peints par
mon père, rien n'est réaliste, mais tout est Vrai ; rien n'est dit
mais tout est suggéré... Et dans l'indicible de la peinture se
révèlent alors parfois, ce que Jean Arp appelait « les
cheminements profonds de la Vie ».

Sa vision ne remplace pas l'existant, mais l'enrichit. Son
principal sujet est la femme dans son intégralité : son existence,
ses interrogations, ses facettes mises en valeur par la mobilité
obligée autour de l'oeuvre, ses faiblesses. Son art est de l'ordre
de l'intime. Son monde est fait des mots qui nomment les
choses en les faisant accéder ainsi à des réalités secrètes...

Cette beauté fragile, nous « murmure » quelque chose à
l'oreille et montre quelque chose à notre oeil. Quoi au juste ?
Je ne sais pas...

Une peinture sur laquelle on n'en finit pas de méditer...

L'élaboration de ce livre est pour moi un geste
d'amour envers mon époux, Daniel Selig.

Mon but est qu'il ne tombe pas dans l'oubli,
mais dans la Renaissance !

Je veux aussi laisser à ma fille chérie un
merveilleux souvenir.

J'ai été touchée par tous les témoignages
d'affection, d'aide, d'amitié tout au long de ce beau
parcours.

Daniel était un personnage rare, parti trop tôt,
dans sa 48^e année. Il laisse derrière lui une oeuvre
magnifique qui me portera jusqu' à la fin de ma vie.

Daniel Selig, native from Colmar, is one of the leaders of the « modems » meeting
together in the « groupe Art-Recherche ». His painting was eminently decorative,
narrative and sensual.

Who could imagine that behind the moustache and the friendly smile of the good-
natured doctor Selig was a different universe ?

The world of the painter who had read innumerable books, a world in which dream
and imagination mix with unreality and fantasy.

This book recounts Alfred's and Daniel's career, both painters, father and son, and
however so different.

Two talents: Alfred a professionnal figurative artist, influenced by Alsatian
romanticism, and on the other hand Daniel, brilliant by the precocity and the richness
of his work, refering to imagination, fantasy and surrealism.

I remember Wednesday aftermons. An air of jazz, a world of serenity
that I could sometimes enter. The smells, paints and essences.
And the colors...

On the canvases that you can ponder there, painted by my father,
nothing is realistic, but it's ail real ; nothing is explained outright,
but everything is suggested. And then a painting in ail its ineffability,
sometimes reveals what Jean Arp called « the deep passageways of life. »
His vision does not replace what exists but enriches it. His main subject
is a woman in her entirety : her existence, her questions, her facets - all
highlighted by the movement called for by a particular work of art,
by her shortcomings.

His art is about intimacy. His world is made of words that name the
unnamable, thereby giving access to secret realities...

This fragile beauty « whispers » something in our ears and shows us
something we can see with our eyes.

What exactly ? I don't know... It's a painting we can never stop
thinking about....

Today, this gift of my father's, this sensibility, expresses itself through
my fragrances.

This book serves as an expression of my love for my
husband, Daniel Selig.

My goal is to be certain that his arresting artistic
oeuvre will live on.

I would also like to leave it as a wonderful legacy
for my beloved daughter, Catherine.

I have been moved by all of the testimonies of affection,
support and friendship that I received about my
husband throughout this beautiful journey.

Daniel was unique; he passed away too soon,
at the age of 48.

He leaves behind him marvellous works of art,
ail of which I will forever enjoy.
