L'histoire suit les aventures de Maurice Beniowski, un noble polonais exil�� en Sib��rie pour avoir particip�� une r��bellion contre la Russie. Beniowski s'��chappe de sa prison et traverse la Sib��rie, le Kamtchatka et l'Alaska avant de finalement atteindre la Californie, o�� il est accueilli par les missionnaires espagnols. L'op��ra est une adaptation du roman autobiographique de Beniowski, qui a ��t�� publi�� en 1791. La musique a ��t�� compos��e par Nicolas Dalayrac et l'op��ra a ��t�� cr�� Paris en 1802.
