It has generally been held that the Apostle of the Gentiles grew up in Tarsus, and that this pagan city had a tremendous influence upon his thinking. Professor van Unnik, however, demonstrates that the only text which gives definite information about Paul's early youth points in an altogether different direction, namely, to Jerusalem. If Paul spent his early years in the holy city of Judaism, with an atmosphere completely different from that of paganism, and dominated by the Law and the Temple, this fact has far-reaching consequences for his theology.
