Omschrijving

Over a period of at least forty years after its initial 1590 publication (in truncated form), Philip Sidney's pastoral romance Arcadia attracted multiple French translations, imitations-and dramatisations. The two plays presented here, never previously translated into English, are gauges of its appeal and adaptability. Jean Galaut, apparendy working from the original, composed his seemingly unique dramatic work (c. 1598) in the shadow of neo-classical Humanist tragedy, isolating from Sidney's sprawling fiction a minor episode replete with tragic potential, which he impressively exploited. André Mareschal, in service to Cardinal Richelieu, produceed a remakably well-balanced tragicomedy (1638) combining humour, transcendent idealism and political pungency.

L'Arcadia de Sidney a suscité plusieurs traductions, imitations et dramatisations en français. Ce volume présente pour la première fois en anglais deux adaptations dramatiques françaises particulièrement significatives du roman de Sidney : Phalante, tragédie par Jean Galaut (vers 1598) et La court bergère, tragicomédie par André Mareschal (1638). Les traductions en anglais de ces oeuvres, fidèles aux textes et aux esprits des originaux, sont assorties d'introductions qui font ressortir les qualités des deux pièces, les placent dans leurs contextes culturel, littéraire et théâtral et explorent leur approches divergentes de l'oeuvre sidneienne.
