Omschrijving

Pierre Troterel est un dramaturge du xvii^e siècle trop méconnu. Né probablement en 1586, ce gentilhomme normand a publié, entre 1606 et 1632, dix pièces de théâtre, éditées à une exception près, à Rouen par les libraires Raphaël et David Du Petit Val : cinq pastorales, deux comédies et une tragi-comédie.

D'une mixité générique toute baroque, ses deux pièces de dévotion, la Tragédie de sainte Agnès (1615) et La Vie et sainte conversion de Guillaume Duc d'Aquitaine (1632), objet de la présente édition, permettent de constater que le théâtre de dévotion provincial s'enracine dans la spiritualité de la Contre-Réforme et cherche à en vulgariser les principes.

Troterel a conçu la Tragédie de sainte Agnès comme une apologie du martyre et de la chasteté et La Vie et sainte conversion de Guillaume Duc d'Aquitaine comme une invitation à la conversion et au retrait du monde.

These first editions of Troterel's plays since the 17th century are accompanied by Richard Hillman's annotated English translations. His introduction also proposes, despite the remoteness of French Counter-Reformation devotional drama from the English theatrical scene, some suggestive points of contact with narrative and dramatic patterns familiar on the other side of the Channel.
