Rio de Janeiro en année olympique. Une ville en plein bouleversement. Une première photo s'attarde sur des éléments préfabriqués en béton pour les nouvelles lignes de métro. Car il ne suffit pas de construire des installations sportives. Il faut équiper toute la ville de nouvelles voies de transport souterraines ou de surface. Il s'agit non seulement d'acheminer les visiteurs et les participants aux Jeux, mais surtout de rapprocher les quelque 12 millions d'habitants de cette mégalopole. À l'abandon, le quartier du port a été ramené a la vie et le port lui-même réhabilité pour transformer Rio en centre culturel et d'affaires. La ville devrait rayonner de toute la force et la beauté qui faisaient sa célébrité avant 1960, lorsqu'elle était encore la capitale du Brésil. Dans les favelas, une vaste politique dite de « pacification » a été mise en oeuvre pour en finir avec l'image de la « Cidade Partida », la ville séparée entre riches et pauvres. Pendant longtemps Rio a été le symbole de l'injustice sociale. La métropole brésilienne sortira-t-elle grande gagnante des Jeux olympiques, en ville moderne et harmonieuse ? Ou ne nous souviendrons-nous que du grand événement international mais sans que rien n'ait vraiment changé ?

Le photographe Michael von Graffenried a pris le prétexte de ce grand bouleversement pour concentrer son regard sur la mégalopole. Le résultat, fascinant, ce sont de grandes photographies panoramiques recto verso de Rio de Janeiro à l'heure zéro.

Rio de Janeiro in the Olympic year. This metropolis is subject to massive change. A first image shows pre-fab cement modules for the new subway lines. Sports fields and stadiums aren't enough : the whole city is being equipped with aboveground traffle facilities. They are for the athletes, visitors and above ail the 12 million inhabitants. The dilapidated port district has been reawakened. And the port ? It has been abandoned so that Rio can become a cultural and economic center. The city is supposed to radiate a bit of its old power and beauty, just like back then, when it had been Brazil's capital until 1960. A policy of pacification has been introduced to the favelas in order to finally shake off the reputation of a city that is separated into rich and poor : the « Cidade Partida ». For quite some time now, Rio has been the negative example of social incquality. Will this city of millions end up as a modernized and peaceful winner after the Olympic Games ? Or will one only have memories of a big international event ? Will nothing have otherwise changed ?

The photographer Michael von Graffenried has used these transformations as a point of departure for his concentrated view on a metropolitan area with millions of inhabitants. The fascinating result ? Large-format, double-page panorama photographs from a Rio de Janeiro in the zero hour.
