This catalog documents the prestigious medieval art treasures from the Augustiner Museum of Freiburg, which will be presented at the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg during the renovation of the building. Around 90 works reflect the visual power, symbolism and belief of medieval art creation. Medieval man saw himself between salvation and damnation, between heaven and hell. This basic religious feeling of fear and hope was also expressed in the works of the time. The assembled paintings, stained glasses, and sculptures represent the cultural landscape of the Upper Rhine, which was particularly fruitful during the high and late Middle Ages. Almost all the works on display date from the period before 1500. Other than through their Christian testimony, they impress through their strong emotional intensity and immediacy of expression.
