Once upon a time, R.L. Merrill attended a fantastic event for LGBTQ+ readers and authors in Portsmouth, Virginia. There was laughter, great books, and a spooky elevator. A group of authors, wrangled by Miski Harris, wrote stories for a charity collection (Midnight in the Renaissance Elevator), and this story was the result of that collaboration. While at the event, Merrill witnessed a military retirement ceremony from her hotel room, and was inspired to give fictional character Chief Swain an HEA. Enjoy this tale of lost souls, fated mates, and the power of love to cross the veil.
