They served in hospitals in Georgetown, Annapolis, New Orleans, Illinois, Ohio, Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey. The women's biographical sketches herein also provide genealogists and Civil War historians with lists of names of members of the many soldiers' aid societies, as well as descriptions of battlefields and military campaigns. Dorothea Dix and Clara Barton are among approximately eighty heroic women from all over the country whose lives are memorialized in this book.
