En 1987, David Bowie déclarait dans une interview : « Je rêve de rencontrer ce groupe d'artistes géniaux que sont les Musulmans Fumants. Ce qu'ils font est très dadaïste et rempli d'humour. Tout ce que j'aime ».

Né en 1956, Philippe Waty, cofondateur des Musulmans Fumants, groupe de peintres affiliés à la figuration libre, va tout au long de sa vie traquer les signes et logos qui peuplent nos vies quotidiennes, pour en dévoiler d'autres sens graphiques et spirituels.

Formidable coloriste, il invente de nouveaux signes et langages, sur les traces de Robert Indiana, construisant une cosmogonie particulière empreinte de mysticisme.

A partir de 2000, avec Dominique Fury, artiste neo pop, ex-membre de Bazooka, ils formeront pendant dix ans un duo façon guitare/basse : croisant figures et motifs, pareil à un ping-pong artistique qui alimentera une oeuvre commune, hybride et prolifique.

Ce livre retrace une oeuvre de plus de trente ans, issue d'une génération d'artistes emblématiques de la scène artistique des années 80, explorateurs de la forme et de la couleur en solo comme en collectif, précurseurs du Street Art.

Born in 1956, Philippe Waty, cofounder of the Steamin' Muslims, a group of artists affiliated with figuration libre, spent his entire life seeking out symbols and logos in our daily lives and lending them new graphical and spiritual meaning.

He was an extraordinary colourist and invented new signs and languages along the lines of Robert Indiana, building a unique world infused with mysticism.

Starting in 2000, he formed a spirited duo with Dominique Fury, neo-pop artist and ex-member of Bazooka, which lasted ten years. Blending figures and motifs, they developed a true artistic exchange that fuelled a common, hybrid and prolific work.

This book spans over 30 years of work by Philippe Waty, a member of the génération of emblematic 80s' artists who explored form and colour, heralding the collaborative art practices and Street Art movements that were to follow.
