This book contains a series of contributions that were presented at the International Conference on Water, Ecosystems and sustainable Development in arid and semi-arid Lands in Yazd in Iran in May 2009. The goal was to open up interdisciplinary thinking on the control and the management of water, a deliberation that has become essential to optimal planning and to proposing initiatives for the future. The history of man is inseparably linked to controlling water as is evident from the blooming of some of the greatest civilisations in arid zones. The heritage and experience acquired by Iran and China enable a link to be made between the history of water use and management and our current predicaments.
