Ce livre est né du procès intenté par sa mère et son ex-compagnon pour empêcher Virginie Linhart de publier son précédent ouvrage, L'Effet maternel. Le procès a été gagné, L'Effet maternel a été publié in extenso.

Quatre ans après l'épreuve judiciaire, l'autrice revient sur cette procédure rarissime. Comment peut exister l'écriture autobiographique si l'entourage en interdit le récit ? Comment écrire sur soi en passant sous silence son enfance, ses parents, ses amours ? Jusqu'où peut-on aller dans la narration personnelle sans blesser l'autre ? Que dit la justice sur l'écriture de soi ? Comment protège-t-elle la liberté de création des auteurs ?
