Il prend soin de situer l'ensemble de la réflexion éthique tant par rapport à l'anthropologie, à la théologie et à la spiritualité patristiques que par rapport à la tradition canonique et à la pratique passée et actuelle de l'Église orthodoxe. Sont ici traitées de manière claire et approfondie les questions relatives au suicide, à l'euthanasie, à l'acharnement thérapeutique, aux soins palliatifs, aux transplantations d'organes, au traitement du corps après la mort et à la crémation. Au-delà de sa contribution essentielle à la réflexion et au débat actuel sur la bioéthique, ce livre offre à chacun les moyens d'une approche spirituelle concrète sur toutes les questions, difficultés et options auxquelles il risque de se trouver confronté à la fin de sa vie, ainsi que des épreuves que constituent la dégradation du corps, la perte de l'autonomie, la souffrance et la mort. Il tente de préciser à quelles conditions l'homme peut trouver l'accomplissement de son voeu profond, maintes fois formulé par la liturgie orthodoxe, d'avoir « une fin de vie paisible, sans douleur et sans honte ».

The aim of this book is to expose all those ethical questions relating to the end of our lives in a Christian light, while taking into account the opinions expressed on the subject in local Churches or among Orthodox ethicists. The author takes care to situate the ensemble of ethical reflection in relation to anthropology, theology and patristic spirituality as well as in relation to the canonic tradition, and past and present practice in the Orthodox Church. Issues such as suicide, euthanasia, excessive and futile medical care, palliative care, organ transplants, the treatment of the body after death, and cremation are treated in depth but clearly. Beyond the essential contribution to today's bioethical reflection and debates, this book gives readers the means to adopt a concrete spiritual approach to all these questions, difficulties and choices (which they may one day have to confront at the end of their lives), as well as ordeals such as body degradation, the loss of autonomy, suffering, and death. It attempts to identify the conditions under which man can find the accomplishment of that deep desire - so often expressed in Orthodox liturgy - to enjoy ‘a peaceful end, without pain or shame.'
