De 1999 à 2001, la restauration du musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers s'est accompagnée de la fouille de 2 400 m² de terrains situés entre l'enceinte antique du III^e siècle et les fortifications du XIII^e siècle. Les vestiges, conservés sur parfois plusieurs mètres d'épaisseur, témoignent d'une histoire continue allant du I^er siècle av. J.-C. jusqu'à la période moderne. Cette intervention préventive, l'une des plus importantes réalisées à Angers, a renouvelé les connaissances sur ce secteur jusqu'alors mal connu de la ville.

Le site, à l'origine en bordure de l'oppidum des Andes, est projeté en plein centre ville durant le Haut-Empire, avant d'être rejeté en extra muros à la fin du III^e siècle puis de devenir zone funéraire. Propriété de l'évêque au VII^e siècle, il accueille un domaine de qualité qui sera absorbé par l'abbaye de Saint-Aubin au IX^e siècle. À partir du XII^e siècle, la politique de revenus des religieux les conduit tout d'abord à y édifier un lotissement, avant de s'en dessaisir au profit d'Olivier Barrault qui y construit son hôtel particulier dès 1483. Cette remarquable continuité du fil chronologique est doublée par un phénomène rarement observé en ville : l'évolution, sur près de 2 000 ans, d'une voie qui borde le site au nord et dont l'ultime état est l'actuelle rue du Musée.

Quantité de données et d'objets jalonnent cette histoire riche en évènements et, au-delà de la connaissance de ce secteur, ouvrent des pistes certaines pour la compréhension et la genèse d'un quartier urbain contemporain.

From 1999 to 2001, the restauration of the Fine Arts Museum in Angers was accompanied by the excavation of an area of 2 400 m², situated between the late 3^rd century Roman rampart and the later 13^th century medieval fortifications. The stratification, preserved sometimes up to several metres in depth, is witness to a continous history that begins in the 1^st century BC and continues up to the modern period. This excavation, one of the most important carried out in Angers, has increased our knowledge of a town where little was known before in the archaeological record.

The site, in the beginning a peripheral quarter of the oppidum of the Andes, is incorporated into the centre of an urban context during the early Roman period, however by the end of the 3^rd century it being placed extra muros to become a cemetery area. Property of the Bishop during the 7^th century, a residence of standing is installed which was absorbed during the 9^th century within the precincts of the Abbey of Saint-Aubin. As from the 12^th century, the revenue policy of the monks encouraged them to create building allotments which were later sold to Olivier Barrault who constructed from 1483 a town mansion. A remarkable unbroken chronological sequence is completed here by a phenomenon rarely observed in an urban contexte : the evolution, over 2 000 years of a street that delimites the northern edge of the site and which becomes ultimately, the modern rue du Musée.

The quantity of information and artefacts that illustrate this story, rich in events, goes beyond the limits of this study and has opened new directions that help us understand the growth of a new contemporary urban quarter.
