Frank Gordon retired from the Navy after serving on and commanding submarines. Retiring to a happy life with his South African school teacher wife Gail and their adopted now adult daughter Charlotte, their happiness was cut short after Gail was killed in a tragic crash. Frank finds his way to a local law firm, where the brilliant ebony beauty lawyer Tish Williams represents him. Tish's boss assigned her the case hoping to kill two birds with one stone- she saw how lonely Frank and Tish were and that they'd be a good match. Tish has a 16 year old daughter Bella that is smart and sassy like her mom, but Tish having a daughter has repelled men, leaving the two of them alone.
Tish got pregnant at 15 and had Bella at 16, the father leaving after he found out about Bella. Despite this, she raised the girl with the help of her loving parents who later died in a car crash. That's when Tish met her future boss, a lawyer who anonymously pays for her college and law school. She then got a settlement that allowed her and Bella to live a good life.
Tish and Frank feel the spark of attraction and start seeing each other with Bella's blessing- she had been tutored by Gail and knows Frank would be a good man for her mom.
The relationship is despised by Gail's younger sister Grace, who sees Frank- and his windfall settlement from Gail's death- as hers. The fact he's seeing a younger woman is bad, but the fact she's black makes the racist Grace's blood boil. Can Frank and Tish survive what Grace is planning?
