German drawn animation film operated in the 1930s between the abstract films of the Weimar Republic and the both aesthetically and technically outstanding films of Walt Disney: from dancing colours and shapes to zestful stories featuring anthropomorphised animals and objects colourful, multidimensional and with synchronous sound. In order to create a German/European counterpart to compete with the American film industry, the Nazi state set up Deutsche Zeichenfilm GmbH in 1941. However, it was with Hans Fischerkoesen, an independent, experienced advertising filmmaker, that the industry succeeded in creating the actual classics of that time, e.g. "Der Schneemann" (The Snowman). The "Traumschmelze" exhibition documents German drawn film animation in the tense environment between avantgarde, everyday routine and propaganda using drawn phases, photographs, written testimony, artefacts and film examples.
