Voilà pour le moins une proposition inattendue : une semaine avec Georges Bernanos. C'est pourtant à la demande d'un carmel que Mgr Gaucher a pour la première fois prêché cette retraite en 2004. Il nous montre ici comment le « chrétien Bernanos », l'écrivain qui n'en était pas un, l'écrivain dont la « seule vue d'une feuille de papier blanc harass[ait] l'âme », l'appelé dont la « vocation sur terre n'[était] pas de rassurer les imbéciles » est un chrétien authentique, un spirituel dont le père Carré relisait chaque année le « Journal d'un curé de campagne », à qui Hans Urs von Balthasar a consacré une « somme théologique », et que nous ne connaissons, ni ne lisons peut-être pas assez. Il sera aussi surprenant de découvrir les affinités de Bernanos avec la spiritualité thérésienne, d'abord à travers certains de ses personnages de roman, mais aussi dans sa propre réflexion sur la place de l'Évangile dans la vie ou le rôle de l'« enfance » sur le chemin de la sainteté. « Ceux que j'appelle ne sont évidemment pas nombreux. Ils ne changeront rien aux affaires de ce monde. Mais c'est pour eux, c'est pour eux que je suis n?, écrivait Bernanos dans la préface des « Grands Cimetières sous la lune ». Gageons que ceux qui entendront cet appel ne l'oublieront pas et témoigneront à leur tour de ce qu'ils entrevoient de la grâce...

In this book , he shows us how the ‘Christian Bernanos', the writer who was not, in fact, Christian, the writer who said that ‘the mere sight of a sheet of white paper tormented his soul', he whose ‘vocation on Earth [was] not to reassure idiots' is indeed an authentic Christian, a spiritual man whose ‘Journal d'un curé de campagne' Carré read again each year, and to whom Hans Urs von Balthasar devoted a ‘massive theological work', a man we don't know and don't read enough. It is also surprising to discover the affinity Bernanos felt with Theresian spirituality, firstly through certain characters in his books but also in his own reflection on the place of the Gospel in life, or the role of ‘childhood' on the path to holiness. ‘Those I call upon are obviously not many. They won't change the ways of this world. But it is for them, for them that I was born,' wrote Bernanos in the preface of ‘Grands Cimetières sous la lune'. We can be sure that those who hear the call will never forget it and will, in their turn, bear witness to a glimpse of grace...
