London, 1854. Thomas Wickham just wanted a night out of the cold. Instead, he got a job.
Thomas is sixteen, homeless, and a former footman with a talent for survival. When he breaks into the abandoned Number 12 Eaton Square, he expects dust and rats. What he finds is Mr. Hedges.
Mr. Hedges is the Manor's former butler. He is also dead. But death hasn't stopped him from maintaining "The Standard." He doesn't haunt the living with chains or moans; he haunts them with aggressive lectures on napkin folding and the proper polishing of silver.
When a tasteless industrialist buys the house and threatens to fill it with cheap renovations and pink wallpaper, Thomas strikes a desperate deal. He becomes the house's "Spiritual Caretaker"-the living hands for a ghost who is fading away. Together, the street rat and the specter must face the ultimate threats: dry rot, a disastrous dinner party, and the terrifying realization that they might actually need each other.
