Omschrijving

Miriam Voss knows what a fractured mind looks like. She used to treat it for a living.

Before everything fell apart, Miriam was a respected clinical psychologist with a marriage, a career, and the kind of ordered life built on reason. Now her license is gone, her marriage is over, and she has fled to Briar Falls, Ohio, hoping a quiet house on Vellum Street will give her the one thing she can no longer find anywhere else: silence.

Instead, the house begins to listen.

At first, it is only small things. A second bedroom that feels wrong the moment she steps near it. Tapping inside the walls at impossible hours. Doors opening in the night after she knows she shut them. The sense that something in the house is not merely present, but attentive. Watching. Waiting.

Then Miriam finds the marks behind the wallpaper. A hidden photograph sealed inside the plaster. A message left by someone who lived in the house decades earlier-a woman who stood in the same room, pressed her hands to the same wall, and began to lose herself in the same terrible pattern.

She says it started the same way.

As the days pass, Miriam's grip on time begins to break. She wakes with blood beneath her fingernails. Finds pages written in her own hand that she cannot remember writing. Hears her name spoken from inside the wall in a voice that is almost human, almost tender, and infinitely more frightening because it sounds like something trying to learn her. The second bedroom is no longer just a room. It is a threshold, a wound in the structure of the house, and whatever lives beyond it knows exactly how to speak to the parts of Miriam that grief and guilt have left exposed.

Desperate for answers, Miriam digs into the history of Vellum Street and uncovers the story of Eleanor Voss, a woman admitted to a psychiatric ward in 1963 after an "episode of acute distress" in the same house. But Eleanor did not simply go mad. She left behind warnings, evidence, and a trail leading toward something hidden between the walls-a place that should not exist, a presence that has been waiting for decades, and a date that keeps appearing in Miriam's journal like a sentence already written before she can understand it.

As memory gaps widen and the house's language becomes more intimate, Miriam is forced to confront a question more horrifying than whether the haunting is real: if the house is calling to her, what if some part of her has already answered?

The Second Bedroom is a slow-burning psychological horror novel about grief, identity, and the terrible intimacy of being known by something that should not know you at all. Haunted, claustrophobic, and deeply unsettling, it is a story of what waits in old houses, what survives inside broken minds, and what happens when the wall between them begins to thin.
