After Second American Civil War, Annabelle struggles to follow her conscience under a rigid regime.
The war took her biological parents and ended in a shaky stalemate. Her adoptive mother is in the political opposition. The loss of her parents and her adoptive mother's opposition leads Annabelle to be rebellious in a society that enforces conformity.
While she tries to suppress defiant thoughts, avoid the draft, and protect her younger sister, the Federal Union has other plans for her. The government hunts men and boys as outcasts and insists she join the enforcers. She has no beef with the runaways and despises the government for taking her parents. This places her in the untenable position where following her beliefs endangers everyone she loves and cares about.
