When the Covid pandemic hit Belgium in March 2020, a small flat in the city centre of Ghent made it impossible for Stefanie, Theo and their daughter to stay confined. This is how, out of necessity, they began to tame and take ownership of this enormous, abandoned, family-owned, 1,000 m2 greenhouse in the outskirts of Ghent in the Flemish countryside.
Over the years, the space was transformed from a greenhouse used for growing tomatoes into a site of experimentation, changing from a weekend home into a classroom, playground, exhibition space, atelier and much more. After more than seven years, life had returned – to anything but normal – in the greenhouse.
Today, because the greenhouse is up for sale, because this story is coming to an end, Stefanie and Theo found it necessary to reflect, document and look back at their experience and everything that happened over the five past years. This is what The Moving Spirit is about – reflecting on yesterday, today and tomorrow; reflecting on life in this hostile but beautiful environment, and how Theo and Stefanie made it all happen.
Can life become richer in a less predetermined domestic environment?
What can life in a vast climate-responsive space teach us about migratory living?
And what tools can we create to facilitate this particular life?
Over the past months, Theo and Stefanie turned the greenhouse into their case study to experience and learn ‘how to occupy space when nature encourages or even forces you to move around within the boundaries of your domestic environment’.
They took the time of this residency to document their domestic life under glass, giving themselves the possibility to reflect on what it means to inhabit the space seasonally, from the depths of winter to the beginning of summer. Grounded in intuition, their empirical research left room, at all times, for exploration and imagination to form a basis for writing about lived experience, researching theoretical references, structuring archives of past moments and drawing furniture that facilitates daily uses – reinforcing freedom and enhancing life.
