Ces derniers ont retenu essentiellement le côté dangereux voire tragique de la mer et ont souvent mis en rapport la tempête et la colère de Dieu. L'auteur montre l'originalité de la symbolique que la Bible tire de la tempête. Pour cela, elle mène de pair une étude approfondie des textes bibliques et une comparaison de ces derniers avec la littérature antique. Le thème de la tempête reste plus que jamais d'actualité.
