En donnant son nom au célèbre canal, la ville de Suez
est entrée avec éclat dans l'histoire du XX^e siècle. À partir
de 1859, l'embouchure de l'ancien canal des Pharaons,
devenue au Moyen Âge un port d'embarquement des
pèlerins pour La Mecque, allait ainsi se transformer en
l'un des plus vastes complexes portuaires et industriels
d'Égypte. Dans la suite des publications déjà consacrées
à Port-Saïd et Ismaïlia, cette monographie, qui réunit
des contributions d'historiens et d'architectes, déroule
le panorama de la longue histoire de la cité et invite les
lecteurs à poursuivre leur promenade architecturale à
travers les rues de la ville.

By giving its name to the famous canal, the city of Suez
made a grand entry into the history of the twentieth
century. In 1859, the mouth of the ancient Canal of the
Pharaohs, which had become a port of embarkation
for Mecca-bound pilgrims in the Middle Ages, began
its transformation into one of the vastest port and
industrial complexes in Egypt. Following on from the
publications already dedicated to Port Said and Ismailia,
this monograph, which brings together the contributions
of historians and architects, draws a panorama of the
long history of Suez and invites readers to go on an
architectural stroll through the streets of the city.
