Stella Hamberg (b. 1975) is one of the most exciting sculptors of her generation. Defying prevailing trends, she builds on classical sculptural traditions, yet at the same time she has developed a vigorous sculptural style all her own that marries the ancient, the medieval, and the modern. Her work centers on the struggle to represent the human body and the formal and existential problems it faces. Hamberg’s most comprehensive museum exhibition to date brings together twenty-three works created between 2007 and 2021. With great technical expertise, she brings off both massive, towering sculptures and small-scale series with equal success. The majority of her impressive works are cast in bronze, a material with a rich tradition in which the creative process leaves visible traces.
