« La fragilité" du bonheur en fait pour une part tout son prix. Il ne faudrait pas cependant que la maladresse de son désir en éloigne par trop. Aussi bien, l'homme a-t-il toujours été attentif à sauver le bonheur. Ce qui peut tromper dans la quête du bonheur, c'est notamment ce que la psychologie et la sociologie d'aujourd'hui appellent tantôt l'immédiatisme ("tout, tout de suite"), tantôt l'illimitation du désir ("il est interdit d'interdire"), tantôt la tentation du fusionnel, où l'on croit pouvoir faire fi des différences, des manques et des frustrations. Dans tous les cas : une difficulté à s'inscrire dans la patience de la durée. Ce qui est oublier que l'être humain appartient précisément à la durée, qu'il ne peut se construire, et donc sauver sa quête de bonheur, que s'il est capable, sans nier le présent, de mettre un écart, une distance entre lui et ses pulsions, pour que celles-ci, pulsions de vie, ne deviennent pulsions de mort. » (A. The things that can dupe us in our quest for happiness are : what psychology and sociology today refer to as 'immediatism' (everything, at once) or the illimitation of desire (it is forbidden to fobid) or the temptation of synthesis, where differences, needs and frustrations are held in contempt. All these reveal a difficulty to apply patience in time. But we must not forget that human beings also exist in time. That man cannot construct himself, and so protect his quest for happiness, unless he is capable of putting a gap - a distance - between himself and his urges, without denying the presen.
