Un premier roi, Saül, élu contre la volonté de Dieu, et fou à l'évidence un deuxième, David, usurpateur, partagé entre sagesse et folie, qui préfère Jérusalem à Bethléem, et dont tout le règne est occupé de luttes intestines un troisième, Salomon, le roi des rois, dont la chronique se confond avec celle du Temple qu'il édifie mais soudain la Corvée royale qui a permis ce grand-oeuvre d'apparente piété se solde par le schisme qui éloigne dix Tribus sur les douze constituant le véritable Israël : le roi présumé le plus sage a commis une folie meurtrière et sans retour. L'analyse de Jacques Cazeaux montre par le détail comment, en mettant en page à sa manière des légendes et sans doute des pans d'archives, le rédacteur de Samuel-Rois s'est livré à une sévère critique, transformant le tout en une « moralité » anti-monarchiste. Brossée en ses trois tableaux, elle met en scène les trois rois, Saül, David et Salomon.
