Roger Godchaux

Roger Codchaux fait partie des plus importants sculpteurs animaliers du XX^e siècle. Dans les années trente, il crée un bestiaire naturaliste, en marge du mouvement surnommé le « retour au lisse ». Grand admirateur de Barye, il renouvelle l'art animalier naturaliste en modelant des animaux dans leurs attitudes habituelles et pacifiques. Cet ouvrage, richement illustré, écrit par le petit-fils du sculpteur, Jean-François Dunand, et le galeriste Xavier Eeckhout, dévoile pour la première fois le génie de cet artiste discret et touche-à-tout : sa statuaire, son extraordinaire bestiaire reproduit ici dans son intégralité et son oeuvre graphique, composé de touchants portrait familiaux et de croquis d'animaux saisis sur le vif.

Roger Godchaux was one of the leading animal sculptors of the twentieth century. In the 1930s, he created a naturalistic bestiary, on the margins of a movement called le Retour au Lisse'. A great admirer of Barye, he revived naturalistic animal artby modelling animals in their usual pacific postures.This richly illustrated book, written by the sculptor's grandson, Jean-François Dunand, and the gallery owner Xavier Eeckhout, reveals for the first timethe genius of this discreet multi-faceted artist : his statuary, his extraordinary bestiary, which has been entirely reproduced in this book, and his graphic works, composed of moving portraits of family members and instantaneous sketches of animals.
