La collection

La collection Recherches sur les Rhétoriques Religieuses (RRR) a pour objet le langage dans ses rapports avec le divin, les formes de communication avec les dieux, les différentes manières de dire la conscience et le sentiment religieux. Elle entend fournir des instruments et ouvrir des voies nouvelles pour une meilleure compréhension de la rhétorique et de la religion.

Le présent ouvrage

La Johannide, oeuvre du poète africain Corippe (vers 550 après J.-C.), célèbre le triomphe du général byzantin Jean Troglita sur les Maures insurgés: événement dans lequel l'auteur voit une victoire de la romanité sur la barbarie et une victoire du christianisme sur le paganisme. Le présent ouvrage démontre la double appartenance littéraire du poème, à la croisée du panégyrique et de l'épopée. Il dégage les principes néoclassiques qui le sous-tendent, ainsi que ses procédés d'écriture (narration, description, catalogue, discours, interventions de l'auteur), sa vision du monde, sa spiritualité. Corippe était conscient du risque de ne produire qu'une épopée classique appauvrie: c'est pourquoi il a fait de la Johannide une épopée chrétienne originale.

The series

The series Research on the Rhetorics of Religion (RRR) studies language in its relationship to the holy, the means of communicating with the gods, the different ways of expressing one's awareness of the divine and the feelings which it elicits. Its goal is to provide instruments of analysis and to open avenues of research which will allow a better grasp of rhetoric and religion.

The present book

In the Iohannis the African poet Corippus, circa A.D. 550, celebrates the recent triumph of John Troglita, a Byzantine general, over insurgent Moors: an event which he regards as a victory of the Roman world over barbarians and of Christians over pagans. This study demonstrates that the poem belongs simultaneously to the panegyrical and epic genres. Then follows a survey of the neo-classical principles governing such a composition and an analysis of the epic style of Corippus (narrative, descriptions, catalogues, speeches, narrator's intrusion), of the world view and of the spirituality pervading the poem. Corippus was aware that he might produce merely an impoverished classical epic: this is why he made of the Iohannis an original Christian epic.
