Nothing is more tragic for any family, rich or poor, than the death of a child. That loss is made worse for the Dunwood family when their young boy's body vanishes from its resting place. Lord Dunwood turns to young thief-taker Coventry Adams and Detective Finbar Farrell to recover the missing corpse.

Coventry and Finn dig into the filthy underworld of body-snatchers, amoral physicians, and street criminals, seeking to uncover the truth of what happened to little Peter Dunwood.

But all is not as it seems. The Dunwoods have dark secrets and new obstacles are unearthed at every turn. Unexpectedly assisted by a young pickpocket, Coventry is forced to confront emotions she thought were buried forever.
