La restauration et la réhabilitation de l'ensemble bâti d'Hosh el Etem dans le centre historique de Birzeit en Palestine constituent une première collaboration fructueuse entre Wallonie-Bruxelles International, l'Institut du Patrimoine wallon et l'Organisation non gouvernementale palestinienne Riwaq implantée à Ramallah. L'ensemble ainsi restauré est destiné à héberger des professeurs étrangers invités par l'Université de Birzeit et des artistes en résidence.

La première partie de l'ouvrage illustre la diversité d'intervention de Riwaq dans les centres anciens de Palestine mais aussi la créativité de ses architectes mise au service de la conservation dynamique de leur patrimoine et de l'affirmation de leur identité culturelle.

La seconde partie est consacrée à l'élaboration et la mise en oeuvre du projet de sauvegarde d'Hosh el Etem et aux stages de formation dispensés in-situ par le Centre des métiers du Patrimoine « La Paix-Dieu ». Largement illustrés, les stages de levés par métro-photographie et laser infra-rouge, de ferronnerie traditionnelle et de peinture en décor ont permis de « réapprendre » aux artisans palestiniens des techniques parfois oubliées mais aussi de nouer des contacts humains empreints de respect dans la quête de leurs racines.

The restoration and the adaptation of the Hosh al Etem site in the historic centre of Birzeit in Palestine represents a successful cooperation between Wallonia Brussels International, the Walloon Heritage Institute and the Palestinian NGO RIWAQ based in Ramallah. The site, once restored, will house visiting professors invited by Birzeit University as well as local and international residing artists.

The first part of the works demonstrates the diversity of RIWAQ's intervention in the historic centres of Palestine. It also showcases the creativity of its architects, called upon to dynamically preserve their heritage and affirm their cultural identity.

The second part is dedicated to developing and promoting the project to save Hosh al Etem, and to the on-site training workshops, organised by the Paix-Dieu Centre for Heritage Professionals. Generously illustrated, the training workshops - for metro-photography surveys, infra-red lasers, traditional ironwork and mural painting and decorations- have allowed Palestinian craftsmen to be retaught techniques that have sometimes been lost, and have also paved the way for the appreciation for traditional techniques among artisans in their quest for reclaiming their roots.
