On présente souvent Louis de Bonald (1754-1840) comme un traditionaliste, partisan de la contre-révolution la plus radicale. Ainsi cet ultra, qui réclamait que la Déclaration des droits de l'homme fût renversée par la « Déclaration des droits de Dieu », a-t-il été salué par Carl Schmitt comme une des figures essentielles de la théologie politique. Les « Réflexions sur l'accord des dogmes de la religion avec la raison », rédigées dans les années 1810 et restées jusqu'à ce jour inédites, montrent que la théologie politique de Bonald ne se réduit pas à une posture réactionnaire. Son objet propre est la correspondance structurelle de la société religieuse et de la société politique. Ce principe directeur d'une sociologie générale (qui valut à Bonald l'admiration d'Auguste Comte et de Balzac) réclame que la foi montre son accord avec la science de la réalité humaine. Le manuscrit publié ici fonde la légitimité sociale de la religion dans le pouvoir qu'elle donne à la raison sur les individus. La vérité du christianisme s'établit ainsi sur la triple exigence de la raison : théorique, morale et sociale. La transcendance divine se révèle dans l'autonomie de la raison, car l'impératif moral de la rationalité ne peut s'accomplir que dans la religion de l'amour du prochain.

Louis de Bonald (1754-1840) is often represented as a traditionalist, a supporter of the most radical counter revolution. And thus this extreme reactionary, who protested that the Declaration of the Rights of Man was overturned by the ‘Declaration of the Rights of God', was hailed by Carl Schmitt as one of the core figures of political theology. His Réflexions sur l'accord des dogmes de la religion avec la raison, written in the 1810s and published only today, shows how Bonald's political theology cannot be reduced to a mere reactionary posture. His true objective is the structural connection between the religious and the political societies. This guiding principle of a general sociology (which earned Bonald the admiration of Auguste Comte and Balzac) requires religion to demonstrate its agreement with the science of human reality. The manuscript published here founds the social legitimacy of religion in the power it attributes to reason over the individual. The truth of Christianity is thereby established on the triple requirements of reason: theoretical, moral and social. Divine transcendence is revealed in the autonomy of reason, because the moral imperative of rationality can only be achieved in the religion of love for one's fellow man.
