La mission archéologique française de Qal'at Sem'an, dirigée de 1980 à 2006 par J.-P. Sodini et aujourd'hui par J.-L. Biscop, a mené des campagnes dans l'ensemble architectural construit en l'honneur de saint Syméon le Stylite afin de compléter les premiers travaux de recherches entrepris par Georges Tchalenko sous le mandat français et par les autorités syriennes.

Les dégagements opérés dans les secteurs de l'entrée principale, du baptistère et de la zone ouest de la basilique cruciforme ont livré un abondant matériel de verre.

Ce fascicule présente une analyse de ce mobilier qui apparaît très fragmentaire. Les verres sont rassemblés en grands groupes chronologiques. Alors que les verres proto-byzantins sont peu nombreux et apparaissent bien souvent résiduels dans les niveaux archéologiques, la verrerie abbasside souvent issue de bons contextes stratigraphiques est particulièrement bien représentée.

Outre le catalogue des objets en verre, ce volume offre une enquête sur la spécificité de la matière du verre de Qal'at Sem'an et tente de saisir le rôle de la Syrie du Nord dans l'industrie du verre à l'époque médiévale.

The French archaeological Mission of Qal'at Sem'an, directed from 1980 to 2006 by J.-P. Sodini and today by J.-L. Biscop, conducted campaigns in the architectural complex built in honor of Saint Simeon the stylite in order to supplement the first works already undertaken by Georges Tchalenko during the French Mandate and by the Syrian authorities.

The excavations operated in the sectors of the principal entrance, the baptistery and the west area of the cruciform basilica delivered an abundant material of glass.

This booklet presents an analysis of this material which appears very fragmentary. The glasses are gathered in great chronological groups.

Whereas Proto-Byzantine glasses are very few and appear often residual in the archaeological levels the Abbassid glass vessel often discovered in good stratigraphic contexts is particularly well represented.

In addition to the catalogue, the present book offers an investigation into the specificity of the matter of glass and tries to determine the role of North Syria in the industry of glass at the medieval period.
