L'existence de quatre évangiles donnant des versions plus ou moins convergentes de la vie de Jésus a toujours été objet de questionnement. Dans les temps modernes, le problème historique a été posé et des solutions proposées pour le résoudre. La théorie dite des « deux sources » est, depuis plusieurs décennies, la plus suivie par les spécialistes de l'exégèse biblique : les rédacteurs des évangiles de Matthieu et de Luc auraient puisé à deux sources, l'évangile de Marc et une source appelée « Q ». L'hypothèse de l'existence de ce document a été formulée au XIXe siècle et s'est avérée féconde. Mais comment a-t-elle été restituée et quel est son contenu théologique ? Après avoir initié leur lecteur à l'histoire de la formation des évangiles, les auteurs l'invitent à visiter le chantier de la restitution de Q, ce qui lui permettra de mesurer le sérieux du travail réalisé par plusieurs générations d'exégètes. Essentiellement une collection de paroles et de discours de Jésus, le document trace un portrait original de ce dernier sans utiliser le titre de Christ et sans raconter la crucifixion ni la résurrection. Qu'a-t-il à nous apprendre sur les croyants qui sont à son origine, sur leur théologie et leur ecclésiologie ? Fenêtre ouverte sur les traditions chrétiennes les plus anciennes, la source Q contribue à notre connaissance des origines du christianisme.

The existence of four gospels presenting more or less convergent versions of Jesus' life has always been challenged. In modern times, the historical problem was posed and suggestions made for its resolution. For several decades, the so-called ‘two source' hypothesis has been the most closely examined by specialists of biblical exegesis: it maintains that those who put the gospel of Matthew and Luke down in writing drew on two separate sources, the gospel of Mark and a source referred to as "Q". The possibility of this other document's existence was evoked in the 19th century and has been widely accepted. But how was it formed, and what is its theological content? First providing a summary of how the gospels were assembled, the authors then invite us to visit those who are working to restore ‘Q'. The reader can measure how meticulously several generations of exegetes have worked on this project. Essentially a collection of Jesus' words and speeches, the document sketches an original portrait of Jesus without using the title ‘Christ' and without referring to the crucifixion or resurrection. But what does it tell us about the believers who produced it, their theology and their ecclesiology? An open window on the most ancient Christian traditions, ‘Q' is a source that contributes to our knowledge of the origins of Christianity.
