Syméon le Nouveau Théologien (949 - 1022) est l'une des plus attachantes et des plus grandes figures de l'Église d'Orient, l'une aussi des plus proches de nous. Il n'était pas un théologien spéculatif, mais un ascète, un homme de prière, un mystique. Théologien, il l'était pourtant, et pleinement, s'il est vrai, comme il ne cessait de le répéter, que seuls peuvent parler de Dieu ceux qui sont illuminés par l'Esprit et contemplent la Lumière divine, répétait-il souvent. Son enseignement se présente comme un témoignage personnel : « J'ai fait l'expérience de l'amour de Dieu pour les hommes », nous dit-il, et c'est cette expérience qui s'exprime dans sa parole et sa prière. Son message garde toute sa force aujourd'hui. Centré sur l'illumination de l'Esprit et la nécessité d'une union personnelle avec Dieu, il ouvre à tous les croyants la voie d'une authentique vie spirituelle.

Symeon the New Theologien (949 - 1022) is one of the most captivating and grandest figures of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and also one of the nearest to us. He was not a speculative theologian, but an ascetic, a man of prayer, a mystic. He was a theologian nevertheless, and fully so, if what he never ceased to repeat - that only those who are illuminated by the Holy Spirit and contemplate the Divine Light can speak of God - is true. His teachings take the form of a personal testimony: ‘I have experienced the love of God for humanity', he tells us, and it is this experience that is expressed in his words and prayer. His message is still as powerful today. Based on illumination through the Holy Spirit and the need for a personal union with God, it opens the way to an authentic spiritual life for all believers.
