Saint Dominique n'a laissé ni traité ni véritable enseignement sur la prière. Mais ses frères ont été les témoins qu'il priait sans cesse, nuit et jour, au couvent ou sur les routes. Ses oraisons étaient très expressives : larmes, exclamations, gestes. Et les premières générations dominicaines ont transmis – par de célèbres petits livrets illustrés – les neuf manières différentes dont il priait, avec tout son corps. Chaque attitude corporelle correspond à une attitude spirituelle et permet à celle-ci de se déployer : les gestes donnent « figure » à ce qui est caché et illustrent les mouvements du cœ ur. La Bible montre que les différentes parties du corps (cou, dos, genoux, mains, pieds, bouche, oreilles) ont des fonctions spécifiques, dynamiques, et qu'elles symbolisent, dans l'exercice de ces fonctions, les intentions du cœ ur. Plus tard, les Pères de l'Église enseigneront les significations spirituelles des gestes quotidiens de l'existence du croyant. Saint Dominique se situe dans cette lignée. Le parcours proposé dans ce livre consiste à suivre saint Dominique non pas pour répéter ses gestes, mais pour s'inspirer de ses dispositions de cœ ur et entrer dans le chemin de l'intériorité. Les neuf manières de prier se divisent en trois étapes, trois lois de la vie : l'accueil, la rencontre et le don. Elles constituent comme un enfantement à la vie de Dieu en nous. Parcourir ces trois étapes, c'est se laisser transformer et unifier pour devenir de plus en plus à l'image et à la ressemblance de Dieu.

Saint Dominic bequeathed neither a treaty nor any real instructions on prayer. But his brothers bore witnesses to the fact that he prayed constantly, night and day, in the convent and on the roads. His funeral orations were most emotional, with tears, outbursts and gestures. With their famous little illustrated booklets, the first generations of Dominicans transmitted the nine different ways Saint Dominic prayed, with his entire body. Each corporal attitude corresponds to a spiritual one which it helps to express the gestures give ‘form' to what is unseen and illustrate the movements of the heart. The Bible shows us that the different parts of the body (neck, back, knees, hands, feet, mouth and ears) have specific dynamic functions, and that when they exercise these functions they symbolise the intentions of our hearts. Later, the Church Fathers were to teach the spiritual meaning of the daily gestures in the life of a believer. Saint Dominic takes his place in this tradition. This book shows us how to follow Saint Dominic - not in order to imitate his gestures - but to draw inspiration from his emotional dispositions and take our first steps on the inner path. The nine ways of praying are divided into three stages three laws of life: receiving, meeting and giving. They constitute the beginning of God's life within us. To follow these three stages is to allow ourselves to be transformed and unified in order to resemble more and more God's image.
