Pray On opens with the joyful wedding of long estranged lovers Joshua Clark and Sarah Richardson, whose happiness only grows when they learn their first grandchild has just been born in Englewood, New Jersey. The newlyweds leave their Philadelphia reception in excitement to welcome the baby.
The story then follows the wider Clark family. Xavier Clark, a rookie with the Charleston Blues, longs for a quieter life with his girlfriend Melissa and their daughter Mia, even as Melissa pursues her Olympic dreams. Bobby and Marian Clark grow closer, while Dolores watches the younger generation with concern.
Meanwhile, Joyce Clark's relationship with Simon Moore falters when he reveals he has a six-year-old daughter. Joyce and Marian later drive family matriarch Mama Elaine down South, where old acquaintances and buried memories resurface. Through these encounters, the lingering influence of Prophet Dan and his hold on Elaine and her late husband Major Clark comes into view.
Pray On is an intimate, intergenerational novel about love, ambition, family duty, and the spiritual legacies that shape the Clarks across time.
