L'amitié littéraire entre Alain Robbe-Grillet et Roland Barthes a duré vingt-cinq ans. Tout témoigne de leur profonde et mutuelle estime intellectuelle : leur correspondance privée, leurs textes publiés comme les propos qu'ils ont tenus notamment dans le fameux dialogue qui donne son titre à cet ouvrage. Si Robbe-Grillet disait volontiers n'avoir eu que très peu de véritables amis, il citait toujours, aux côtés de Jérôme Lindon, le nom de Roland Barthes. En 1980, il écrit son « J'aime, je n'aime pas », publié ici pour la première fois, en pensant à son ami. En 1985, il pronostique : « C'est son oeuvre d'écrivain qui précisément restera. » Dix ans plus tard, en 1995, il l'imagine en romancier impatient, allègre, s'amusant à récrire, « dans l'euphorie, avec un inépuisable bonheur », Les Souffrances du jeune Werther... Ces textes de Robbe-Grillet sont comme l'écho différé de ceux que Roland Barthes lui a consacrés dans ses Essais critiques en 1964.
