La lettre aux Romains est un texte majeur parmi les écrits de Paul. Elle a fait l'objet, au cours de l'histoire, de multiples commentaires et on sait le rôle qu'a joué son interprétation dans la division des chrétiens au XVIe siècle. Voici un instrument de travail (dépassionné) pour aborder ce texte difficile, personnellement ou en groupe. Après un rappel du contexte historique et une présentation de la lettre dans son ensemble, le texte de Paul est étudié du premier au dernier verset en suivant le plan dégagé au départ. L'apport de Paul est mis systématiquement en lumière tant dans la connaissance qu'il donne du Christ que dans sa façon d'exhorter à vivre une existence vraiment chrétienne au sein d'une société pluriculturelle. Un chapitre final reprend « les grands thèmes de la lettre aux Romains ». En encadré ou en marge, le lecteur trouvera des informations complémentaires, des définitions de termes, des explications de mots « techniques », des références bibliques... Les « études de texte », les « fiches de travail » (une vingtaine) lui permettront de travailler plus à fond tel ou tel passage. Une reprise synthétique de tel ou tel chapitre difficile puis de la lettre entière est proposée en fin d'ouvrage sous forme de questions (avec réponses). Ainsi le lecteur pourra-t-il tester sa compréhension et dégager les articulations et éléments essentiels de la théologie et de la christologie pauliniennes.

The Epistle to the Romans is a major text among Paul's writings. Throughout history, it has often been commented and we know the role its various interpretations played in the division of Christians during the 16th century. Here is a working tool (defused of passion) to approach this difficult text individually or in a group. After recalling the historical context and presenting the letter globally, Paul's epistle is studied from the first to the last verse according to a plan announced at the outset. Paul's contribution is systematically highlighted in two respects: the knowledge of Christ he brings us, and his manner of exhorting its recipients to live a truly Christian life in a multicultural society. The final chapter resumes "the major themes of the Epistle to the Romans". In boxed features and in the margins, the reader will find complementary information, definitions of terms, explanations of "technical" words and Biblical references... The "studies of the texts", and "working files" (about twenty) facilitate deeper investigation of such and such a passage. A summary of particularly difficult chapters then the whole letter is presented at the end of the book in the form of questions (and answers). So readers will be able to test their comprehension and identify the essential elements of Pauline theology and Christology.
