Face à une logique de système qui entend ressaisir le sens de ce qui est en le totalisant, l'existant fait l'épreuve délicate d'une réalité qui toujours lui échappe, qui n'est jamais ce qu'il attend qu'elle soit, qui ne cesse de contredire toute espérance de maîtrise. Or, penser cette réalité signifie précisément renoncer à l'exigence philosophique de système, selon laquelle nous pourrions clôturer la signification des êtres, des choses comme des événements. Mais il ne s'agit nullement de renoncer à la philosophie, et cela ne nous voue pas davantage à l'absurdité ou au tragique supposé du monde. D'une tout autre façon, il nous faut accéder à un type de rationalité dont la vocation n'est pas de totaliser le sens, mais de décrire ce qui est comme ce avec quoi l'on ne peut jamais en avoir fini. Telle est la vocation originaire de la phénoménologie, qui n'est pas de transformer en thème chaque phénomène qu'elle aborde, mais à l'inverse de le décrire dans la façon qu'il a de nous apparaître.

Confronted with a systemic logic that aims to grasp the meaning of what exists by totalising it, the existing must face the delicate challenge of a reality that forever eludes it, is never what it assumes it to be, and incessantly thwarts all attempts to master it. Yet, thinking this reality involves abandoning the philosophical demand for system, which might enable us to define the meaning of beings and things, as well as events. But in no way does this mean renouncing philosophy neither does it doom us to absurdity or to our world's supposed tragedy. In quite another way, we must access a form of rationality whose vocation is not to totalise meaning, but describe that which is as something we can never stop defining. Such is the original vocation of phenomenology, which is not to transform every phenomenon we encounter into a theme, but, on the contrary, to describe it as it appears to us.
