When he arrived in Cartagena he was shocked by the slave trade and dedicated himself for forty years to gaining freedom for the slaves while he cared for them, bringing them food and medicine and tending the sick. He caught the plague and died in 1654. Because of his tireless work, he is the patron saint of slaves, African-Americans and race relations.
