It incudes major figures fronm the abolitionist movement and politicians on both sides, such as Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. It describes military commanders, including some who emerged from the war as heros and some whose reputations were badly damaged. The book also tells stories of the many women who were directly involved in the conflict, from the nurse Clara Barton to the spy Rosy O'Neal Greenhow.
